WRIST ARTHROSCOPY

Wrist arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that involves the use of a small camera, called an arthroscope, to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the wrist joint. This procedure allows orthopedic surgeons to visualize the interior of the wrist joint and perform various interventions through small incisions.

Procedure

Anesthesia :- The patient is typically placed under either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation to ensure comfort during the procedure.

Incisions :- Small incisions, usually around 3 to 5 millimeters, are made around the wrist. These serve as access points for the arthroscope and other specialized instruments.

Arthroscopy :- The arthroscope, a thin tube with a camera on its end, is inserted through one of the incisions. The camera transmits real-time images of the inside of the wrist joint to a monitor, allowing the surgeon to assess the condition of the bones, cartilage, ligaments, and other structures.

Treatment :- Depending on the findings, the surgeon may use additional incisions to introduce specialized instruments. Common procedures during wrist arthroscopy include:

    • Removal of Ganglion Cysts: Fluid-filled lumps that can develop around joints.
    • Debridement of Damaged Cartilage: Smoothing or removal of damaged cartilage.
    • Ligament Repair or Reconstruction: Addressing tears or instability in wrist ligaments.
    • Treatment of Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex (TFCC) Injuries: TFCC is a structure in the wrist that can be injured or torn.
    • Removal of Loose Bodies: Small fragments of bone or cartilage within the joint.

Closure: After the necessary repairs or adjustments are made, the instruments are removed, and the incisions are closed with stitches or adhesive strips.

Indications for Wrist Arthroscopy

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome :- Wrist arthroscopy may be used in certain cases of carpal tunnel release.

Wrist Fractures :- Assessment and treatment of fractures within the wrist joint.

Chronic Wrist Pain :- When the cause of persistent wrist pain is not clear through other diagnostic methods.

Instability :- Addressing instability issues within the wrist joint.

Evaluation of Unexplained Symptoms :- To investigate and diagnose unexplained symptoms such as swelling, pain, or limited range of motion.

Advantages of Ankle Arthroscopy:

Minimally Invasive :- Small incisions reduce trauma to surrounding tissues.

Faster Recovery :- Generally, patients experience quicker recovery times compared to traditional open surgery.

Diagnostic Accuracy :- The arthroscope provides a detailed view of the ankle joint, aiding in accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment.
